What is an IBAN and why check it?
IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is the international standard for identifying bank accounts in SEPA transfers and international payments. Before sending money, it is worth checking the IBAN to avoid rejections and return fees.
An IBAN checker does not look up balances or personal data: it only verifies that the number structure is correct. Checking the IBAN is the first step to ensure the payment reaches the intended destination.
How does the IBAN check work?
This IBAN checker applies the MOD-97 algorithm from ISO 13616. The check verifies the country code, the length for each country standard (between 15 and 34 characters) and that the check digits are correct.
If the IBAN check passes, the format is valid. It does not guarantee the account is active, but it does mean the bank will not reject it immediately for a format error.

Every IBAN has three parts: country code (2 letters), check digits (2 numbers) and BBAN or national account number (up to 30 characters). A UK IBAN follows the format GB00 AAAA 0000 0000 0000 00.
