Which bank is this IBAN from? — Identify the institution instantly

Enter a valid IBAN and get the institution name, BIC (when available) and country.

Bank identification from IBAN

This tool shows which bank an IBAN maps to based on the institution code embedded in the number (and our data sources). It is free and needs no registration.

Type or paste the IBAN in the field and click the button to see the result.

To also verify that the IBAN is valid (checksum and format), use the full IBAN validator.

How do we infer the bank from an IBAN?

Every IBAN contains a country code and a national account number (BBAN). In many countries the first digits of the BBAN identify the financial institution. We normalise and validate the IBAN and look that code up in our database and related sources.

That is why only the IBAN itself is required — no sign-in and no file upload.

Limitations

A structurally valid result does not guarantee that the account exists or is active. The tool is not a substitute for confirmation with your bank.

Frequently asked questions about identifying the bank from an IBAN

Can I tell the bank from an IBAN alone?

In most cases yes. The IBAN encodes the country and, in many countries, the institution code for that account. We combine that with a directory to show the commercial name and related details.

Is this the same as validating an IBAN?

Not exactly. This page focuses on identifying the institution. Our IBAN validator explicitly checks format and the MOD-97 checksum; the two tools complement each other.

What is the difference between the BIC and the bank code inside the IBAN?

The bank code inside the IBAN is a national identifier assigned by each country's central bank (in Spain it is 4 digits). The BIC is an international identifier (ISO 9362) of 8 or 11 characters used by the SWIFT network. Both point to the same bank, but they belong to different systems.

What happens if I enter an IBAN from a different country?

The tool supports IBANs from the SEPA area and from the main countries that use the IBAN format. We first validate the country-specific format and length, then look up the institution code in our directory. If your IBAN is from a country we do not cover yet, we will tell you so.

Why does the BIC not appear in some results?

Not all banks publish a public BIC, or assign one to every segment. In those cases we show the bank name and country but not the BIC. If you need the BIC for an international transfer, ask your bank or the account holder.

Do you store the IBAN I look up?

No. We process the IBAN in memory only for the time needed to validate it and query our directory. We do not store it in a database, do not link it to your session and do not share it with third parties.
